Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog™ at
Minnesota Children’s Musem
When: Now through January 18, 2015
Cost: $9.95 ages 1+ for museum admission (plus $5 World Trade Center ramp parking with validated ticket if desired).
Appropriate for: Kids 5 & under will most likely enjoy this exhibit. There are a few spaces designed especially for toddlers, and a space or two you might set an infant down if it’s not crowded.
I brought along my own almost-three-year-old companion to poke around the new Clifford exhibit at the Minnesota Children’s Museum. She’s not familiar with the PBS television show that inspired the exhibit, but, like most preschoolers, she can readily identify that ginormous red dog. This model’s got a slide for a tail!
There are lots and lots of hands-on activities to engage little ones. Most promote what are apparently called “Clifford’s Big Ideas” — such as working as a team, helping others, and believing in one’s self. In the name of research, my daughter tried them all, including:
- working a short conveyor belt to deliver oversized bones to Clifford’s food dish
- collecting mail around Birdwell Island to take to the post office
- working the lunch counter at Samuel’s Fish and Chips Shack
- steering the ferry boat to Birdwell Island
- sorting shapes in Cleo’s doghouse
- building “sandcastles” and collecting shells at T-Bone’s beach, and
- performing with Clifford’s canine pals at Emily Elizabeth’s Backyard Theater
We completed our tour with a stop at the book nook for a couple of the classic Clifford stories. It doesn’t mean much to the three-year-old, but her parents grew up with Clifford, too!
Note: Minnesota Children’s Museum provided me with 2 complimentary play passes to review Adventures with Clifford. All opinions of the exhibit are my own.
