- Written by local author, Tran Thi Minh Phuoe, Vietnamese Children’s Favorite Stories brings to life some of the folklore of the Vietnamese culture. Tran is Minnesota’s first Vietnamese librarian, and her journey here was not easy living as a child in a refugee camp in Malaysia, traveling to California, and taking a bus to Minnesota.
Tran’s story captures fairytales from her homeland for English-speaking children to learn. Some are very unique and others are similar to tales we know. For instance, The Story of Tam and Cam is the Vietnamese version of Cinderella.
When I read through the stories, I was delighted by the common themes of irony and of good versus evil. I also loved the fact that I didn’t recognize many of them.
This is a fantastic way to introduce a different culture to your child or to embrace your culture if you are Vietnamese. The pictures are fascinating and brightly colored. They are very unique and beautiful (and I am picky about illustration).
The one drawback that I found was that some of the stories were very long, but for me, the way I would get past that would be to summarize long paragraphs and move it along.
